Laser Tattoo Removal Aftercare: The Dos and Don’ts

Laser tattoo removal aftercare is that part of your treatment where you keep your end of the bargain. After we’ve done our bit, it’s up to you to do your bit and take care of yourself. It’s not hard to do but it’s still important.

Here’s what you can expect after your tattoo removal session: your skin will feel tender and warm. It might even feel like mild sunburn. That’s all perfectly normal, so don’t be too alarmed by any of that. The tattoo we’ve been working on might turn white, but that will only occur for an hour or so. In some cases, there may be bruising, swelling and prolonged redness in the affected area. Possibly even blisters, bleeding, crusting and scabbing. Again, nothing to panic about. When this happens, apply antiseptic cream and cover the area with a sterile dressing until everything settles down within 24 to 48 hours.

So now you know what to expect, here’s what you should and shouldn’t do after your laser tattoo removal session.

  • In the days after your session you can relieve any discomfort by applying a cold compress or icepacks, moisturizer, sunscreen cream, and Doff post laser gel. The bit about Doff post laser gel might look like a shameless plug but the thing is – it’s good stuff and it works.
  • It’s ok to get the area wet, but don’t scrub it dry. That will only flare things up and set your treatment back quite a bit. When you have to dry the area, gently dab the area.
  • Apart from not scrubbing yourself dry, it’s also important to put these other things on your “Don’t” list. Workouts, heavy lifting, hot showers, saunas, spas and exposure to the sun.
  • A couple of weeks after your laser tattoo removal session, your skin might feel itchy. This is a good itch! It means the skin is healing. But if it starts to drive you crazy, more cold packs and moisturizers should help.

As far as aftercare goes, that’s about it. Not too hard is it? By going along with the plan, the affected area should be just fine. But in the very rare cases when the area looks and feels infected – crusting, oozing, spreading redness, ongoing aches and pains – don’t delay. Contact us straight away.
